Research Statement
Jacquelyn’s (Jackie’s) research investigates how physical ocean features structure marine ecosystems. Her current research at WHOI explores the impact of frontal dynamics in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current on episodic biological production and subduction of organic material. This is done through the use of satellite data, in-situ measurements, and Lagrangian diagnostic techniques applied to surface current data. The goal of this work is to define physical initiation mechanisms that signal the occurrence of episodic primary production and carbon export events from surface velocity fields. Results aim to improve our understanding of the contribution of fronts to the Southern Ocean carbon cycle.
During her PhD at the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership, Jackie studied how coastal currents transport and aggregate plankton at the base of the food web, increasing foraging efficiency for upper trophic creatures in Palmer Deep, Antarctica and the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Her other research interests include other transport-driven ocean processes, the spatial ecology of food web focusing, the effective use and dissemination of code and large data, communicating scientific results to large audiences, and increasing the participation of traditionally untapped talent in ocean sciences.
