Research Statement
Matthew (Matt) Charette is Interim Director of the Marine Policy Center and Director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Sea Grant program, as well as a Senior Scientist in WHOI’s Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry. A chemical oceanographer by training, his research focuses on submarine groundwater discharge and the application of radionuclide tracers to quantify coastal and oceanic processes. His work includes studies of solute fluxes, shelf–basin exchange, and circulation pathways in systems ranging from temperate estuaries to the Arctic Ocean. He has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications and led field programs around the world, from the Arctic to the Southern Ocean. Since joining WHOI as a postdoctoral scholar in 1998, he has held multiple leadership roles, including Director of the Coastal Ocean Institute, and his work has been recognized with honors such as the Charles F. Adams Sr. Scientist Chair and ASLO’s John H. Martin Award. Charette earned his B.Sc. from the Florida Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography.
