Some Info Dr. Michael V. Jakuba is a Senior Engineer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with extensive experience designing and deploying marine robotic systems. He is the technical and programmatic lead for the Nereid Under Ice microtethered hybrid ROV and Clio biogeochemical vertical profiling AUV and has developed new capabilities for other autonomous vehicles including the ABE and Sentry AUVs, the Nereus HROV, SeaBED-class AUVs, Iver2 and REMUS AUVs, Wave Gliders and Seagliders. Since 2023 he has led the Tethys-class long range AUV (MBARI LRAUV) program at WHOI---the lab operates three of these vehicles in service of oceanography and on a sustained basis for scallop stock assessment and measuring marine infrastructure impact. Dr. Jakuba has gone to sea on over 45 research expeditions including four expeditions to ice covered regions of the High Arctic, expeditions focused on hydrothermal venting and seafloor geological survey, assessment of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as well as other deployments focused on engineering development of autonomous tending systems, low power acoustic navigation, long-range light-tethering, and enhanced subsea autonomy. Dr. Jakuba received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program.
