(1)  Theory — Investigation of a unified theory to correlate underwater sound field perturbation with ocean environment variability

(2)  Technology — Advancement of underwater acoustic technologies by collaborating with outstanding WHOI engineers through a number of ONR DURIP projects for AUV’s, acoustic sound sources and hydrophone arrays and the recent Keck-WHOI Acoustic Telescope project (https://www.whoi.edu/press-room/news-release/whoi-awarded-1-million-3d-acoustic-telescope/)

(3)  Numerical modeling — Integrated ocean acoustic modeling with realistic environmental inputs ultimately towards a data-assimilated ocean acoustic model

(4)  Big data science — Ocean acoustic informatics.  We need DATA to inform theoretical analyses and numerical models. Theories and modeling tools can construct the back bone, but we need data to build up the muscle, eventually yielding a data-assimilated virtual reality ocean acoustical domain.

(5)  Naval relevance —  Securing the Navy’s advantage on ocean acoustics.  GO TO SEA!!  I have been conducting field work in Arctic, China Seas, East Coast, etc., and keeping my international collaborations to access the global ocean.  I recognize the importance of ocean research on securing our Sea Power.
